In Honor of Ursula K. Le Guin
J. Dianne Dotson – Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer - In Honor of Ursula K. Le Guin

Today I am saddened to learn of the loss of renowned science fiction and fantasy writer Ursula K. Le Guin, who wrote the Earthsea series, among many other novels. You can read her New York Times obituary here.

Ms. Le Guin paved the way for women sci-fi and fantasy writers like myself. The scope of her work, the generosity of her spirit…these are all the stuff of legend now.

In 2004, Ms. Le Guin put out a call, I believe on her blog, for some poetry. We readers could send her a poem. Since I do occasionally write poetry, I wanted to participate. I chose a poem that encapsulated where I grew up. Brazen as ever, I sent her a copy of the poem.

She wrote back! The header you see on this post is her response, from February 12, 2004. “Write on!” she signed it. And so I did.

Thank you, Ms. Le Guin, for showing the way.
