Gleaming Inside
J. Dianne Dotson – Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer – Gleaming Inside

Merriment. Early sunsets. Staying up too late. Adding spices to everything. Making art gifts, baking cookies, twirling…I have been doing all of these things. But not much writing!

I am not the kind of person who thinks one should write every single day. I think it’s good to write often, but not necessarily on a rigid, routine schedule. Unless you have deadlines or that’s just your routine. Right now, my routines are all catawampus anyway, with holidays, runny noses, too much sugar, and maudlin tunes that begin to pull my nerves tight like banjo strings.

So I’m giving myself the week off from writing major things. I might write a scene or two, to be stitched into a manuscript later. But not this week. This week is about festivity, sharing, and giving to others, but do not forget self-care.

Quite simply, self-care is the greatest gift you can give to yourself. And when there are short days and schedules looped all over the place like silly string, it’s easy to derail. Take a walk without headphones and try to notice things you haven’t on other walks. Take the nap you sorely need. Drink lots of water! Stretch. Turn off all your devices an hour before bed. Make something that you feel like making, not out of obligation, but because the making of it soothes you.

Rekindle the flame inside you by giving yourself some oxygen. You can choose to live where there are frosted windowpanes or not. But make sure your candles are gleaming inside.

Happy Holidays and ad astra!
