An Appalachian Book Signing
J. Dianne Dotson – Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer – An Appalachian Book Signing

Every other year, we take a cross-country road trip to attend family reunions and see old friends. This is a major production, with two kids. But we’ve got it down to a fine art as well as a science. We Ping-Pong between the homes of our relatives. We eat way too much Southern food from groaning tables. We marvel at the summer green in Southern Appalachia, especially this year, when there has been an unusual amount of rain.

This year is different from all those before. This year, relatives congratulated me on my book. Some asked for their copies to be signed! It felt so surreal. And then something remarkable happened. I was offered a book signing at a comic book shop!

A little explanation is in order. A friend of mine came up with the idea, and asked the comic shop owner if he would be interested. He was. We sent a flurry of Instagram messages back and forth while I was heading east on the trip. And then it was confirmed!

On Monday, June 25, I attended a book-signing event at Cavalier Comics in Wise, Virginia. Let me tell you about this store, before I go on. Two years ago, on another such family trip, we stopped in Cavalier Comics and loved it instantly. We remembered the owner, Brian Marcus, as being so friendly and passionate about his work. We also found some great comics and toys to take back with us on our trip home. So it felt like a mini reunion, to be back in his shop. Only this time, he had moved into a much larger shop, deserving of all his precious wares. And it’s an absolute dream. Comics (including loads of back issues), toys, games: everything your geek heart could desire, Cavalier Comics has. It’s one of the best comic shops I’ve ever been in. So if you’re ever traveling through southwest Virginia, you have to stop in!

Now, as for the signing, this was a very last-minute event, and I only had a few copies of the book on hand. But I was thrilled to see people show a lot of interest on social media for the event. Of COURSE, I brought my brownies. And then people came up, spoke to me, and bought the book! Having an author event while on vacation, in the region I was born and where my grandfather mined coal…it’s hard to find the right words to describe how it made me feel. I can’t thank Brian of Cavalier Comics enough; I can’t thank my friend Jason Wamsley enough. But also? To those who came to the signing, thank you. Thank you for supporting my work, and giving me joy. I am so grateful!
