J. Dianne Dotson – Science Fiction and Fantasy Writer – Indie Author Day

On October 13, 2018, I joined several other indie (independently published) authors, as well as some traditionally published, for Indie Author Day. The wonderful folks at Coronado Public Library  and Coronado Cultural Arts Commission hosted this event.

The first part of the showcased local authors and provided helpful workshops for authors at any stage of their careers. The panel attendees included Dr. Sandra Bonura, George Galdorisi, Richard “R.G.” Head, Jane Mitchell, Dick Belkin, Judy “J.E.” Laufer, Suzette Valle, Ann Bancroft, Jennifer M. Franks, and Tamara Merrill.

Retired U.S. Navy Aviator George Galdorisi provided a number of interesting tidbits that I found particularly useful.

Librarian Franklin Escobedo told us about the intriguing services provided by Library Journal, one of which is called SELF-e. This is a way for authors to get their books to readers internationally via library systems. I think this is a brilliant idea and I may participate in this!

After the panels, we authors sold our books at a book fair on the library lawn. Remarkably, a huge rainstorm had roared through the night before, and the lawn was muddy. My traditional “Heliopause Shoes” (yellow, to match the title font, while my dress is always blue, to match the rest of the cover) sank down into the mud. I didn’t care. I had a blast! I shared a table with fellow local author Cali Gilbert, whose books sound absolutely fabulous! And on my other side of me, George Galdorisi sold his books. Between these two, I had so much fun, and I learned a great deal.

I was delighted to see fellow sci-fi author Ana Levley  show up as well! Thank you, Ana! You should definitely get her book Beasts: Beginning of the End.

I also performed my first reading of Heliopause: The Questrison Saga: Book One and I hugely enjoyed that.

I am so grateful to have been part of Indie Author Day. Special thanks to Franklin Escobedo of the Coronado Public Library for helping me get on board. And thank you to Lei Udell of Coronado Arts for offering the opportunity to be showcased among local authors!

Authors, I encourage you to get your works out there and meet new authors at events like Indie Author Day! It’s a priceless experience, and you will make new friends too.
